Who approves weighing equipment, and where to verify it — 36 OIML certificate-issuing authorities across 30 countries, plus how NTEP, Measurement Canada, OIML and the EU MID relate to each other.

Weighing equipment is approved differently in almost every country. This page lists the bodies that issue OIML certificates — the international type-approval scheme — so you can go straight to the right authority and verify a claim yourself. ScaleRegistry is a registry, not a regulator: we record and link, we do not approve equipment and we do not issue certificates.
Which approval do you actually need?
NTEP (United States)A National Type Evaluation Program
Certificate of Conformance, issued through NCWM. This is what a US weights & measures
inspector looks for on a commercial scale. Verify in the
NCWM database.
Measurement CanadaCanada does not work state-by-state. One
federal authority approves devices and authorizes the private companies that inspect and
certify them. Verify at measurement.canada.ca.
OIML-CS (international)An OIML certificate is a type-approval
issued under an international recommendation (R76 for nonautomatic weighing instruments,
R60 for load cells, and others). Many countries accept or build on it. Verify in the
OIML-CS register.
MID (European Union)Instruments placed on the EU market are
covered by the Measuring Instruments Directive and assessed by notified bodies. National
authorities below are the starting point for the country you are selling into.
These are not interchangeable. A device can hold an NTEP certificate and no OIML certificate, or the reverse. Check what the jurisdiction you operate in actually requires — and confirm it with the authority, not with us.
OIML certificate-issuing authorities
36 authorities across 30 countries. The certificate counts are not each authority’s total output — they count how many of the 1,739 certificates held by the brands listed in this registry were issued by that authority. A country showing none simply means none of the brands we list hold a certificate issued there.
Canada is not in this table, and that is
correct. Measurement Canada regulates weighing in Canada but is not an OIML-CS
certificate-issuing authority, so it does not appear in OIML’s list. The same is true of
several countries that run their own national approval schemes. Absence here means
“does not issue OIML certificates” — never “unregulated”. For
